Save corrupted after a crash during autosave

Symptom

After a crash during autosave, your character slots are empty or unreadable. In one Steam Deck thread, the cloud may have synced the corrupted file too.

Steps marked “changes files” delete, rename or overwrite something. Back up the whole save folder first.

  1. Copy both ER0000.sl2 and ER0000.sl2.bak to a safe place.

  2. Delete ER0000.sl2, then rename ER0000.sl2.bak to ER0000.sl2. Works for some players, not all.changes files

    Check: the character slots load.

  3. Or turn off Steam Cloud, remove the local files, then turn Cloud back on to pull the latest cloud copy. Download that copy from the Steam Cloud web page first.

  4. Last resort, as some players report: use a character manager tool from Nexus. Archive your characters, delete the save data in game, then restore the characters. Third-party tools are at your own risk, so back up first.changes files

Unverified: Whether Steam Cloud syncs a corrupted save is only a player suspicion.
