Move game saves to a new PC

Updated
22 Oct 2026

This page shows four ways to carry your game saves to a new PC, from the easiest to the most manual. Don't wipe the old PC until you've confirmed the saves load on the new one, and keep a copy of everything you move.

Easiest: Steam Cloud

When: The game supports Steam Cloud

  1. On the old PC, launch the game and quit cleanly so it syncs. Check for the Cloud icon on the game's store page.

  2. On the new PC, install Steam and the game, sign in to the same account and launch. Steam downloads the cloud files first.

Manual copy for games without Cloud

When: The game has no Steam Cloud

  1. Find the save location (see the find-save-location page).

  2. With the game closed, copy it from the old PC to the same path on the new PC.

  3. If the path contains your Steam ID or username, rename the folder to match the new one. Valve doesn't document this, so check it for each game.

Copy the Steam userdata folder

When: The game keeps its data in userdata

  1. Find your SteamID3. Look at the folder names under Steam\userdata, or look up your profile on steamid.io and read the ID3.

  2. Copy userdata\<ID3>\<app ID> from the old PC to the new one, into the same ID3 folder.

  3. Launch the game and let Steam handle any conflict window (see the steam-cloud-overwrite page).

Use Ludusavi

When: You have many games to move

  1. Install Ludusavi on both PCs. On the old one, run Backup into a folder or a cloud drive.

  2. On the new PC, point Ludusavi at the same backup folder and run Restore.

  3. If your usernames or Steam paths differ, set up redirects.

What to know

  • On a new PC, Steam downloads your cloud files before the game launches, for games that use Cloud. Developers decide what's stored, and many games don't use Steam Cloud. Source
  • If a game doesn't use Steam Cloud and you can't get to the old PC, Valve says those saves can't be recovered. If you still have the old machine, the game's developer can help you find and move the files. Source
  • Steam keeps local copies of cloud files in Steam\userdata\<your Steam ID>\<app ID>\. That folder lists the accounts that have logged in on this PC. The Windows default is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata. Source
  • Your Steam client settings are in Steam\userdata\<your Steam ID>\7\. Source
  • The account folder in userdata is named with a SteamID3 number, and each game folder inside is named by its app ID. A community answer says you can convert it on steamid.io using the form U:1:<number>. Valve's wiki confirms the [U:1:W] format; double-check the result with a tool. Source
  • Steam only creates an account's userdata folder after you log into that account on the PC. Source
  • To see your Steam ID in the client, click your profile name > Account Details. It's the 17-digit number that starts with 7656. Source
  • Game Pass PC saves are in a wgs folder, under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\<PackageFamily>\SystemAppData\wgs (or XboxGames\GameSave\wgs). They use containers.index, container.N manifests and GUID-named blobs, not plain save files. The format is documented by the third-party GamePassStorage project (Apache-2.0). Source
  • Before you move Game Pass saves, back up the wgs folder, close the game and the Xbox app, and wait for the cloud sync to finish. Xbox Cloud can overwrite files that changed while it was syncing. This comes from a third-party Palworld tool. Source
  • Ludusavi backs up saves from many stores and can restore them. Its backups store absolute paths, so a different username or Steam library location needs redirects. It doesn't convert saves between operating systems on its own. Source
  • Ludusavi works with Rclone (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and others), or any cloud mount that looks like a folder, for cloud backups. Source

Mistakes that make it worse

  • Steam folder numbers differ per account. Saves from another Steam account sit in a different userdata folder. Source
  • Game Pass wgs data is made of containers, not simple files, and it isn't documented as portable between PC stores. Community swaps work for some games and fail for others. Source
  • Xbox Cloud can overwrite wgs files that changed while it was syncing. Source
  • Ludusavi stores absolute paths. To restore under a different user or Steam library, set up redirects. Source
  • Ludusavi doesn't convert saves between Windows and Linux or Mac for you. Source

Tools people use

  • Ludusavi: Backs up on one PC and restores on another. Third-party tool: use at your own risk and back up first.
  • GamePassStorage (wgs): Backs up, exports and imports Xbox Connected Storage saves. Third-party tool: use at your own risk and back up first. Only Abiotic Factor was verified with it.

Third-party tools are not ours. Back up first and use them at your own risk.

What we couldn't confirm

  • We found no official Microsoft statement on whether Game Pass saves can be moved to Steam. What we know about it comes from third parties only.
  • Some games tie save files to your Steam ID, for example with the number in the path or file name. That depends on the game, and we have no list of which ones.
  • We couldn't find a Valve page that says the userdata folder name is the same as your SteamID3. The link is based on a Steam community answer and Valve's developer wiki.
