Cloud save overwrote your Baldur's Gate 3 progress

Help me sort out a Steam Cloud conflict with my Baldur's Gate 3 save on this PC, following findmysave's steps.

   - Start read-only: find my saves and list name, size and modified time.
   - Back up the whole save folder before changing anything.

   - Make sure the game is closed first.

Cross-save stuck syncing or saves missing from your Larian account

Symptom

Cross-save is stuck on "Syncing cloud save", or your saves are missing from your Larian account (mostly reported on Xbox and consoles).

  1. Create a Larian account, link your platform account, and turn on cross-save in Game Options.

    Not sure where the save folder is?

  2. Don't quit the game until the "Syncing cloud save" message goes away.

    Check: The message disappears.

  3. Launch the game through your platform's client (Steam, GOG Galaxy and so on). Launching it by hand doesn't switch these services on.

  4. Open My Saves on your Larian account and download the save you need. It only keeps your most recent few saves (the account FAQ says 10).

Unverified: Larian's pages disagree on how many saves are kept (10 on the account FAQ, 5 in an older Xbox FAQ). Account cross-save only syncs a copy, never the original.

Steam shows "Steam Cloud Out of Date"

Symptom

Steam shows "Steam Cloud Out of Date" next to Baldur's Gate 3.

  1. In the game's Properties > General, check that Steam Cloud is turned on.

    Not sure where the save folder is?

  2. This warning often shows up after the game was closed while you were offline. Reconnect to the internet and launch the game again to resync.

    Check: The warning is gone from the Steam library.

Steam cloud won't sync on a work-managed Mac

Symptom

Steam cloud fails to sync on a work-managed Mac (one player used Zscaler), and you need your saves before you hand the laptop back.

  1. Copy the Story save folders off the machine by hand. On Mac they're under ~/Documents/Larian Studios/.

    Not sure where the save folder is?

  2. If the copy fails, the permissions on a managed device may be blocking access.
