Fix "Unable to Save" and errors or crashes when loading

Symptom

You get "Unable to Save", or the game shows errors or crashes when you load a save.

Steps marked “changes files” delete, rename or overwrite something. Back up the whole save folder first.

  1. Close your antivirus and any overlays. Add the game's exe and the Larian Studios AppData folder to its exclusions (Windows Defender, Bitdefender, and for Avast LariLauncher.exe).

  2. Back up first, then delete the contents of %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\LevelCache.changes files

    Check: Load a save. If it works now, you're done.

  3. Verify the game files. On Steam: Properties > Local Files. On GOG Galaxy: Manage Installation > Verify/Repair.

  4. Turn off Steam Cloud for the game (Properties > General), or run bg3.exe / bg3_dx11.exe from the bin folder as administrator.

  5. Rename the %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3 folder, start a new game to test, then copy your old saves back a few at a time.changes files

    Check: The new game saves and loads, and the old saves still load after you copy them back.

  6. Still failing? Zip your latest save and send it to Larian support. Tell them which is the newest save that loads and the oldest one that fails.

Saves won't sync or load between two PCs

Symptom

Saves won't sync or load between two PCs. One shows the "Public" profile and the other the Steam profile (reported in January 2023, patch 9).

  1. Compare the version number on the main menu of both PCs. Update the older one and set Steam Betas to None.

    Check: Both PCs show the same version number.

  2. Wait for the in-game sync and the Steam cloud sync to finish before you quit.

  3. If the option is there, turn on cross-save in the game options.
